GARAGE SAFETY & LOSS PREVENTION

Back safety, sprains, and strains

OOMPHF! . . .#@*&U1@!!! Another strained back— the result of improper lifting.  This is not a rare event because muscle or ligament sprains, strains, or tears occur every day in garages and shops. The result is back injuries in private industry total millions of days lost from work every year.

The back is a magnificent tool made of muscles, ligaments, and bone that we use consistently throughout the days, weeks, months, and years of our lives — and livelihoods. Yet this tool, without the proper knowledge and application, can create a significant amount of pain, debilitation, and other potential impairment if it's misused or abused.

We probably don't give it much thought, but we all use our backs every day in the varied activities of our jobs — sitting, standing, kneeling ...even lying on the floor requires certain movements from the back.

Back-related problems have consistently been the number one on-the-job injury. Companies incur thousands of dollars in Worker Comp losses per average back injury claim, not to mention the aggravation, pain, tightness, limited movement, and other difficulties employees might experience because of bad backs. This only reinforces the need to lift safely, correctly, and with the right material-handling aids.
